Boiler Not Working in Cardiff? 7 Checks Before You Call an Engineer

Boiler stopped on a cold Cardiff morning? Before you book anyone, there are a handful of safe checks that solve a surprising number of call-outs — and if they don't, you'll be able to tell your engineer exactly what's happening.

1. Check the boiler pressure gauge Most combi boilers in Cardiff homes want between 1 and 1.5 bar when cold. If the needle is near zero the boiler will lock out. Topping up via the filling loop is a two-minute job, but if pressure keeps dropping you have a leak somewhere — often a radiator valve or a corroded pipe under a floor.

2. Look for a fault code Write down the code on the display. Codes like F1, E119 or L2 tell an engineer whether it's pressure, ignition or a fan fault before they arrive, which usually means the right part on the van first time.

3. Check the condensate pipe Cardiff gets cold snaps that freeze the white plastic condensate pipe running outside. A frozen pipe stops the boiler dead. Pouring warm (not boiling) water along the pipe often brings it straight back to life.

4. Test the thermostat and programmer Batteries in wireless thermostats fail quietly. Turn the thermostat well above room temperature and listen for the boiler firing. Check the programmer hasn't slipped back to a summer schedule.

5. Check gas is on elsewhere If your hob won't light either, the issue is gas supply — or your prepayment meter is out of credit — not the boiler.

6. Check power and the fused spur The boiler runs off a fused connection unit, usually near the appliance. A tripped RCD in the consumer unit will kill the boiler while the rest of the house looks fine.

7. Bleed the radiators Cold at the top, warm at the bottom means trapped air. Bleeding restores circulation — check the pressure again afterwards.

When to stop and call us Stop immediately if you can smell gas, see water leaking from the boiler case, or the boiler repeatedly locks out after resetting. Never reset a boiler more than twice.
