Is an Annual Boiler Service Worth It? A Cardiff Engineer's Honest View
21 April 2026 · 5 min read · PHBLUE, Cardiff

Servicing feels like paying for nothing when the boiler is working fine. Here's what you're actually buying.
What we do on a service - Visual inspection of the appliance, flue and ventilation - Combustion analysis with a flue gas analyser - Burner, heat exchanger and condensate trap cleaned - Seals, electrodes and safety devices checked - Gas rate and operating pressures verified against the manufacturer's figures - Written service record for your warranty
Why skipping it costs more Almost every manufacturer voids the warranty without an annual service, and warranties on new boilers now run to ten years. A £90 service protecting a £2,500 appliance is not a close call. Servicing also catches the small things — a weeping seal, an electrode about to fail — before they become a no-heating call-out in January.
Best time to book Book in late summer or early autumn. Everyone in Cardiff phones in the first cold week of November, and that's when availability is tightest.
What a good service isn't A five-minute look at the display and a sticker. If nobody opened the case or used an analyser, you didn't have a service.
