How to Choose a Plumber in Cardiff (and Avoid the Cowboys)
10 March 2026 · 5 min read · PHBLUE, Cardiff

We regularly get called out to correct other people's work — badly bonded pipework, unvented cylinders fitted without qualification, radiators plumbed in backwards. Here's how to avoid that.
Check the register, not the van Anyone can print a logo. Ask for the Gas Safe registration number and check it on the official register, and confirm the card covers the specific work — boilers, cookers and unvented cylinders are separate qualifications. For electrical work, look for NICEIC or equivalent.
Get a written quote, not a verbal estimate A quote is a fixed price for defined work. An estimate isn't binding. Your quote should list the appliance and model, what's included, what isn't, and the total with VAT.
Warning signs - Cash only, large deposit up front, no paperwork - Pressure to decide today - No address, no landline, no company details - Vague about warranty registration or building control notification - Won't put the price in writing
Good signs Answers the phone. Turns up when they said. Explains the fault in plain English. Sends photos of the work. Cleans up. Honours the agreed price. Those six things come up in almost every review our Cardiff customers leave.
PHBLUE is Gas Safe registered and NICEIC-backed, covering plumbing, heating, gas and electrical work across Cardiff.
